Death Rate by Age in China: The study shows that older adults have been hit hardest by COVID-19.
- Among those ages 80 and older, the death rate was 14.8%,
- 8.0% for those ages 70 to 79;
- 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69;
- 1.3% for those ages 50 to 59;
- 0.4% for those ages 40 to 49, and
- 0.2% for those ages 10 to 39.
- No deaths have been reported among children from birth to age 9.
The study also identifies which existing illnesses put patients at risk. It puts cardiovascular disease at number one, followed by diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and hypertension.
Other scientists have estimated there could be 10 times as many people infected as are ending up in the official statistics. That means the overall death rate is likely to be lower than the one reported by most studies.
Comparing Coronavirus with the Flu:
The common flu causes up to 5 million cases of severe illness worldwide and kills up to 650,000 worldwide people every year, according to the World Health Organization
In the US: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that so far this season, there have been at least 15 million flu illnesses for the 2019-2020 season, 140,000 hospitalizations and 8,200 deaths in the U.S. The CDC reports there have been 54 reported flu-related pediatric deaths this season from Influenza B viruses. Using Masks: The CDC does not recommend face masks for people who are well and without symptoms. The agency does recommend face masks for people who show symptoms of the virus and those taking care of someone sick with the virus (including health care workers).
Travel Restrictions from China to the USA:To slow the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) into the United States, CDC is working with public health partners to implement new travel procedures for both non-US and US citizens and permanent residents.
